The final games of the Mesquite Senior Games 2023 Spring Season were played last week on the Bocce Ball courts at Sun City.

The four-day event, spanning from April 17-20, consisted of 2 and 4 person team competition, with a total of 56 players.
“Although Bocce Ball is a Nevada state sanctioned tournament, 2023 is not a qualifying year for Bocce Ball,” said MSG Interim President Sandy Tudor. “The National Senior Games are only played in odd years. Players must first qualify from the state in the previous even numbered year. Mesquite is the venue for Nevada sanctioned tournaments for both Bocce Ball, Men & Women’s softball, so even years are the Nevada qualifying year for players of Bocce Ball and Softball.”

Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were awarded to the winning Bocce Ball teams in the tournament.
Tudor says they are looking at holding Mesquite Senior Games event in the fall with both Bocce Ball and pickleball.

Twila Trytten was playing in the MSG for the first time. She plays Bocce Ball regularly in Sun City. “Playing here with MSG has been fun!” Trytten said.
“It has been a great season,” said Tudor. “We have had awesome players and volunteers at each event. We have about 120 volunteers.”

Tudor explained that new volunteer software now allows people to go online and view positions that need to be filled. They can then pick what they like and sign-up for it – even choosing their times to volunteer.

MSG Volunteer Coordinator Beth Caplinger uses these sign-ups to draw up her schedules.

MSG Sports Director Shaun Edwards said, “The 2023 Mesquite Senior Games were a resounding success. We had people from all over the western states and a few from Canada, participating in one or more of our fifteen different events.”
“We haven’t heard of any unhappy participants,” Edwards added. “Everyone was happy and having a good time. And that is what we are here for: to help our seniors stay healthy and happy.”

Anyone fifty years or older can participate in the Mesquite Senior Games. For more information visit www.mesquiteseniorgames.org.
