Virgin Valley High School celebrated one of the most beloved high school traditions last week: Prom! The hype for prom began on Monday, May 1, with the start of V-Week. The festivities continued until their peak at the dance itself, held on Saturday evening at the Casablanca resort.

The theme for V-Week came from the hit Netflix TV show “Outer Banks.” This beachy-adventure theme was perfect!

One of the highlights of the week took place on Friday with the long-time tradition of the Great Race. This team obstacle course/relay race takes students around the entire campus amidst stiff competition.
Seven teams competed for the title this year. Only one as named victorious.

The race started with a search for the team’s baton. Bounding through a soapy blow-up pool, each team’s starter made a mad dash to start the race off right. Freshman Alonzo Roque was the first to find his baton, starting his team the “Baller Ballers” off right.

There was a whole lineup of events. For example, the “Dawg grab” had a student retrieving random objects from a bowl of slippery spaghetti with only their toes. In addition, there was a watermelon eating contest and a classic mud-pit where students crawled through slimy mud.

The race wrapped up with a final, uphill sprint. Adrenaline and school spirit were high as Cade Litzenberger made the final stretch towards the finish-line. For the second year in a row, the defending champs, “The Beaters,” took the W.

“The Great Race event has always been a favorite for me and my friends, but not just because we won back-to-back,” said two-time Great Race Champion Tyler Black, “It’s been our favorite because it gives the students a reason to dress up as a team with our friends and enjoy the thrill of competition.”

The Beaters definitely enjoyed the thrill as all twelve members piled into a Jeep blasting Queen’s “We Are the Champions” and took a victory lap around the school.

Continuing the excitement of The Great Race, the Casablanca resort graciously hosted prom! The theme for Virgin Valley’s prom was “Midnight Masquerade.” Casablanca took the theme to heart with their outstanding and sophisticated decorations of gold, black, and purple hues.

The dancing itself made it a night to remember as DJ Ricochet bumped the tunes. Ricochet got everyone grooving. Khaleb Moreno stole the show as he showed off his sweet moves in the middle of a dance circle to “The Git Up” by Blanco Brown.

It wouldn’t be a prom without the crowning of prince and princess and king and queen. This year was no exception. Juniors Dylan Barnum and Mattea Wahl were crowned prince and princess. While seniors Rudy Gomez and Rebecca Moreno ruled the dance as king and queen.

“Prom was by far the best experience I had in my life,” said prom king Rudy Gomez, “I wanted to save it for my last year of high school, so I decided to not go during the previous years to make it a memorable night. And man was I right! My date and the students made it a night to remember!”

The night was definitely one to remember! The wonderful time and forever memories wouldn’t be possible without the support from the Casablanca. The resort went above and beyond to create the perfect night for the perfect memories! The student council would like to express their deepest gratitude for Casa’s planning and donation of the entire prom venue and music. The student council would also like to thank all the chaperones and behind-the-scenes helpers, and a big thank you to all the students who attended and made it a memorable night!
