The Farmers Alsum Insurance Agency in Overton is going through a major change this month as owner and agent Karen Alsum prepares to retire.

Farmers has had a presence in Moapa Valley for 42 years and has over 20 years experience in the insurance industry. She became the owner of the local Farmers business in 2006.

Alsum formally announced her retirement by sending out letters to all her current clients. She and her husband are excited for their new adventures, but are a little nervous as well.
“This is emotional and rough,” Karen said. “I will miss seeing clients every day. And my staff is family to me. So that makes it hard.”

Alsum said, that her years as a Farmers agent have been life changing for her. “I have so many memories of commnity events that I have been involved with over the years,” she said.

She lists some of these off which include Veterans Day parades, Little League, softball teams, Shop with a Cop, MVHS scholarships, teacher of the year, 4th of July, young patriots parade, Clark County Fair, Junior Livestock, NIAA, Junior Rodeo club, Relay for Life and the list continues on.

“My heart is so full because of this community,” Alsum said. “We could have never found a better place to call home these last 37 years. I also have had the most wonderful women to work with every day. I could not be more grateful for our team. They have forever left an impact on my life.”

Alsum knew over a year ago she wanted to retire, but she wanted to find the right person with the right mindset who cares about the company and about Moapa Valley. She found those important requirements in Megan Wilder.

Wilder currently is commuting from Summerlin but has intentions of moving to Moapa Valley. She had been with Costco Wholesale for 17 years, but wanted a new career.

Wilder began the process to become an agent with Farmers back in September of 2022, then met Alsum in February of 2023. She officially became available to clients May 1.

Megan hails from a small town, Cody, Wyoming, and is ready to return to the peace that a small town brings. “I am eager to get to know everyone here, whether they are a clients of Farmers or not,” Megan said.

Wilder will be the small business owner/agent and will operate under the umbrella of Farmers.
Alsum’s last official day at Farmers will be May 31. “It is my clients that I will miss the most,” she said. “While I will no longer be your agent, I look forward to seeing you around town.”

The Farmers location and phone number will remain the same. For more information, stop in at 196 S. Moapa Valley Blvd., #4 in downtown Overton or call 702-397-8282.
