MV Libraries Provide Fun & Free Summer Activities

By CORINNE MESSER

The Progress

Many activities are happening this summer at the library branches in Moapa Valley for all age levels. The best thing is that the activities are free!

Both libraries have a Summer Reading Challenge for everyone, even adults. It will run until July 31. There are age-customized activities and fun reading options for every ability.
Moapa Town Library, located at 1340 East Highway 168 in Moapa has a number of summer activities planned.

Because it is the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, many activities will focus on that theme. On Saturdays in June from noon to 4 pm is the Hip Hop Drop Mix Challenge. Children can create their own music using guitar riffs, drum solos, melody lines, and more.

Every Tuesday in June from 11:30-noon, kids under 5 can come to Dr. Suess Hip Hop Storytime. Come read, sing, and dance along as an invited guest raps to classic Dr. Seuss stories!
Thursday, June 15, is a Father’s Day Card Craft Day from 10am – 6 pm.

June is Pride Month. There will be Make & Take worksheets and activities to help adults and kids learn more about LGBTQ+ inclusivity, acceptance, and diversity.

A space-themed magic show will take place on Tuesday, July 18 from 2-3 pm with Las Vegas Magician John Lewit.

More activities are in the works for July. Call (702) 864-2438 for more information or swing by the Moapa Town Library at the beginning of the month to pick up a calendar.

Moapa Town Library’s hours are Tuesdays 11-7 pm, Wednesdays-Thursdays 10-6 pm, Saturdays 11-5 pm.

Moapa Valley Library, located at 350 N. Moapa Valley Blvd. in Overton will continue its ongoing weekly activities of Lego Club, Stay & Play, Storytime, Crafternoon, Teen Space, Tabletops Games Open Play, and an Adult Book Club. Stop in the library for a printed calendar of the times.

The library has a large hydroponics unit. Family Hydroponics is a 6-week course offered for ages 8 to adults running June 2 through July 7. The library is accepting up to 8 family groups for this class.

Each group will grow and harvest its own section in the unit. Registration is required.
Recently, the library has acquired two 3D printers. These printers will be available to use for free for ages 10 and up after attending a 3D Printer Certification class. Registration at the front desk is required and the class is offered Saturday, June 10, or Saturday, July 8 at 11 am. Once certified, one can choose an image and have the printer create it!

Continuing the celebration of Hip Hop on Saturday, July 1 at 11:00 am, there will be a Hip Hop Movie for everyone ages 12 and up. Call the library for more information.

Wednesday, July 26 at 11:30 am will be the Summer Challenge Celebration Water Day. Kids can come ready to make a splash and have some cold treats.

Artist Paul Pinion will offer a class on Space Painting on Friday, July 28 at 11:00 am.

On July 28, 5:45-8:00 pm there will be a Teen Lock-in when kids, grades 6 and up, can stay after hours, play games, do activities, and watch a movie. Registration is required.

The library is also holding a few special events at the Old Logandale School at 3011 N. Moapa Valley Blvd. in Logandale.

On Wednesday, June 14 at 11:30 am Magician Adam London will be performing.

On Tuesday, June 20 at 11:30 am, Talewise: Science Heroes for grades K-5 will be at OLSHACS. It is about two unlikely heroes who must learn to work together to stop a super-polluting mastermind! Throughout the story, children help the performer conduct amazing science experiments.

The Shadow Puppet Theater for ages 0-12 will perform at OLSHACS on Thursday, July 6, at 11:30 am.

The Fratello Marionettes troupe will bring a production of Jack and the Beanstalk on Tuesday, July 11 at 11:30 am at OLSHACS.

The June hours are Mondays-Thursdays 11-7 pm, Fridays-Saturdays 10-6 pm, and closed on Sundays.

Call the library at 702-397-2690 for more information.
