Love, Family to Hold Pride Month Events

A Mesquite LGBTQ advocacy group has been planning some exciting Pride Month activities during the month of June. The leaders of Love, Family have a whole lineup of entertainment scheduled for the whole community.

All proceeds from these events will be donated to the HOPE Squad suicide prevention organizations at Virgin Valley High School and Hughes Middle School to help local teens.

A Pride Bar Crawl will take place on Saturday, June 17. A 21-and-over crowd will receive shuttle transportation to a half dozen local bars throughout the evening with great activities planned at each location.

The fun will begin at the 1880 Grille at the Conestoga Clubhouse at 1499 Falcon Ridge Pkwy. starting at 3 pm. After some time there, the shuttle will loop all around town. It will make stops at Wedgie’s (4:15), Eureka Casino (5:30), Mad Mike’s (7:00). Then it will drop the members of the group off at either Envy Nightclub (9:15) or back to the 1880 Grille (9:30).

Tickets for this event are available at eventbrite.com. The admission of $35 includes shuttle pass and drinks.

Pride Bingo Night will take place on Saturday, June 24 at Envy Night Club. Entry at this informal event is free for ages 21 and up. The activity will provide a place for people to show up and socialize with other people for the evening. There will be food caterers there and attendees can purchase BINGO cards to participate in the fun throughout the evening.

In the final local Pride Month event, Love, Family will present “Mesquite’s Got Family”: A Drag Show for All Ages on Friday, June 30 beginning at 6 pm at the Mesquite Community Theatre at 150 N. Yucca St.

Love, Family founder Dana Long acknowledged that this production has caused a good deal of controversy in Mesquite. But she assures that the drag show will be appropriate for an all-age audience.

“A lot of communities have put a ban on drag shows as a whole,” Long said. “They worry that it will be an over-the-top sexual exploit or something. But that is not what drag entails.”

Long explained that the theatrical exageration of gender, or drag, has a long tradition spanning from Shakespeare to Mrs. Doubtfire and beyond.
“That is all that drag is,” Long said.

She explained that Love, Family was made abundantly aware by City staffers when they wanted to schedule the theatre, that performances there must be appropriate for a general audience.
“We have gone to great lengths to ensure that this performance is completely G-rated,” Long said. “It will be clothing appropriate, content appropriate, and family friendly. It will be an uplifting evening of entertainment.”

Tickets to the show are free and are available at the office of Mortgage Mate at 483 W. Mesquite Blvd. Suite A during regular business hours. Tickets will also be available at the theatre box office on the night of the event or from Love, Family by emailing Long at dana@lovefamilynv.com.
