Another great Overton Library activity took place last week in the 2023 Summer Reading Challenge, as Las Vegas magician Adam London performed on Wednesday, June 14 at the Old Logandale School. About 40 excited kids, along with their parents, waited eagerly for the magic to begin and they were not disappointed.

Local librarian Aimee Potts said this show has gotten too big and popular to hold at the library, so they moved it to the Old Logandale School where there is more capacity to hold the crowds that attend.

London wowed the kids from his very first trick. He held up a copy of The Progress, then tore it up, folded it, then unfolded it to reveal a completely whole newspaper. That set the tone for the performance and everyone paid close attention to see if they could figure out how he was doing the magic.

London had father and daughter Jesse and Jenna come up on stage with him and presented a locked box. London put seven keys in a cup, held by Jenna. One by one, Jesse tried each key to unlock the box, but none worked. Then London gave the dad a special key and the box was opened, only to reveal that it was empty. He had Jesse put his wallet, cell phone and keys in the box and padlock it back up.

Mixing together all eight keys, Jesse was instructed to take one key at a time and hold it in his hand. If he felt vibes from the key, that meant the key would open the lock. But if he didn’t feel anything special, then he would put the key in the locked box through a hole in the top.

Jesse got vibes from only one key. The audience was getting nervous as Jesse had put all the other keys into the box. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when the one key opened the box!

The magician performed many more tricks to the delight of everyone in attendance. Each time he told a story about reading and how books can teach about anythng that is of interest to anyone.
London said that he loved to read about Harry Houdini and told stories of his amazing escapes.

Kendra and Maisy were called onstage to watch London perform a great escape. Kendra shackled London, then he had a bag where Maisy made sure there were no hidden keys or holes in it. With the bag outstretched by a rope, London put his hands in to escape his shackles, all the time pulling one hand out at a time to converse with the girls.

The adults in the audience chuckled as the girls did not notice that his wrists were already free. When the big reveal came, the kids clapped at the great escape.

Heidi, Haylie and Slade attended the event with their mom Amber. They said that they liked magic. Heidi said before the show, “I hope to see him pull a rabbit out of a hat.”
“I want to see him make something float,” Haylie said.

After the show, both girls giggled and Heidi said, “Magic is fun,” while Haylie exclaimed, “The man did neat tricks.”

London explained that his grandfather was an amateur magician and farmer. London said, “I was ‘bitten’ by the ‘magic bug’ at eight years old, and had become obsessed with it.” He would go to his small town library and check out magic books and memorize them.
“Books can teach you anything, and there is no better place to find what you are looking for than the library!” London said.

He also told the kids to challenge themselves this summer, to keep reading and learning new things.
London has a comedy magic show in Las Vegas called Laughternoon. For more information on that visit https://laughternoon.vegas/.
