OPEN FORUM: Open letter to Moapa Valley community

By BRIAN BURRIS

As you may know, our community holds a special place in my heart—a haven for living and playing, offering unparalleled opportunities within our region. What truly distinguishes this community is the dedicated individuals who selflessly contribute to its well-being.

Since the day my family and I moved to the valley, I have endeavored to be one of those contributors, involving myself in various capacities such as the fire department, 4-H shooting sports coaching, youth football coaching, CERT team membership, and volunteering with my family to enhance the allure of our valley.

Although politics was not initially part of my agenda, a deep sense of responsibility compelled me to represent our community, which I felt was not adequately advocated for. Thus, I threw my hat into the ring for the Moapa Valley Town Board seat.

Over the years, I witnessed the evolution of community involvement—from a limited application process to an elected position, thanks to the work of the late state assemblyman Harvey Munford who passed legislation to ensure rural communities could choose their officials.

Despite initial challenges, the recent election cycle marked a significant milestone with increased participation, allowing our community to truly choose its representatives. I am grateful for the three terms I served on the board and always prioritized the community’s best interests, even when it was not the easiest path.

Throughout these terms, I have witnessed positive transformations facilitated by Commissioner Kirkpatrick’s dedication and secured funding. Working closely with her, I have come to appreciate her unwavering commitment to our community. While disagreements were inevitable, our shared goal was always to uplift the community, and I value her candor, mentorship, and friendship.

Representing this extraordinary community, surrounded by remarkable individuals, has been the highlight of my life. Moapa Valley is not just a place I reside; it is my home, where I have raised my family and formed lasting relationships.

Now, as life takes unexpected turns both personally and professionally, my increased responsibilities have required me to transition full-time relocation to Reno and has made it impractical to continue living in Moapa Vally. Therefore, with a heavy heart, I have tendered my resignation from the Moapa Valley Town Advisory Board as I am no longer eligible to serve on the board per Nevada State law.

I am confident that Commissioner Kirkpatrick will select a worthy successor, ensuring the representation of our valley remains strong. To my colleagues on the board, your dedication has been instrumental, and I am grateful for the growth you have inspired in me. Most importantly, to the community, thank you for your support and trust in allowing me to represent you. Though I may no longer be a resident, Moapa Valley will forever be my home, and I look forward to returning to visit.
