The Progress
The Mesquite City Council approved a bid last week for a contracter to install traffic light signals at two key intersections in the city.
The bid price of $945,559 from Wheeler Electric was to install traffic signals at intersections of Pioneer Blvd and Horizon; and at Pioneer Blvd. and the Walmart parking lot.
At the City Council meeting held Tuesday, Feb. 13, Public Works Director Travis Anderson explained that the city staff had held a public bid opening on Feb. 6. Wheeler had been the only responsive bidder on the project, he said.
“Our engineer’s estimate on the project was roughly $1.4 million,” Anderson said. “So we were very excited at this bid amount.”
Anderson emphasized that all of the funding for the project will come from the Regional Transportation Commission. So it would have no impact on the City’s general fund budget, he said.
Anderson added that, if the bid was accepted at the meeting, construction would likely begin within the next month and be completed by late in the summer.
“Both of these intersections are in deep need,” he said. “So it will be good to have these completed.”
With little council discussion and no public comment, Council member Karen Fielding made a motion to accept the bid for the project. The vote to approve the motion was unanimous.
