The Progress
1970s rockers Styx performed their hits at the Venetian Theatre earlier this month. The band included founding members Tommy Shaw and JY Young and were accompanied by Lawrence Gowan on keyboards, Todd Sucherman on drums and Rick Phillips on bass.
The song list included several renditions from their mega album, 1977s The Grand Illusion, like “Come Sail Away,” “Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man),” and of course “Grand Illusion.”
One of the highlights of the show was when keyboardist Lawrence Gowan brought out one of Liberace’s grand pianos; candelabra and gold trim included. It sounded beautiful as he played a long introduction to “Fooling Yourself.”
There is a story behind Liberace’s pianos. Lawrence Gowan explained from the stage, that when Liberace died, he left his pianos to the Las Vegas community for future musicians to play.
The Venetian Theatre is a beautiful venue that is designed to look like an Italian opera house. It has comfortable seating for 1800 and excellent acoustics.
Speaking of acoustics, Todd Sucherman is a fabulous drummer and played hard all night. He is a ten-time winner of the Drummer of the Year award from Dummer Magazine.
Styx had made their Venetian run an annual event having celebrated the 50th anniversary of the band’s founding in 2022. So, if you missed this year’s shows they are sure to come back soon.

Thanks for covering this! Although, that’s not what he said. Gowan said the pianos and the rest of the the Liberace Museum Collection were left to the Liberace Foundation to benefit the performing arts. Indeed, only a very select few are invited to play the Liberace Pianos on stage. Great tribute and finale to an amazing concert!
Thanks for the correction, I was paraphrasing. The Ear
