MV FFA help in Warm Springs conservation efforts

By ISAAC LINFORD

The Progress

Youth from the Moapa Valley FFA Chapter plant seeds during a service project/field trip at the Warm Springs Natural Area last month.

Members of the Moapa Valley FFA Chapter, and their adviser Bryan Linford, took a trip to Warm Springs Natural Area to do some community service last month in cooperation with the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA). This is an annual trip that the Moapa FFA chapter does to help with conservation efforts at the Natural Area.

Not only does this experience provide a great opportunity to learn, but students also gain service which is a line in the FFA motto: “Living to Serve.” In earning FFA degrees a minimum of 25 hours of service is required.

While at Warm Springs, students planted various kinds of seeds, took potted plants from the greenhouse into the shade house, harvested seeds from mature plants, and planted wood cuttings that will eventually grow into trees.

When planting seeds and carrying plants to the shade house, all of the students worked together with the guidance of the instructors from SNWA. It wasn’t until they moved into harvesting seeds and planting wood cuttings that the students were split into two groups so that everyone would be able to have the chance to experience each.

After all of the work was completed, everyone was led to the Warm Springs Natural Area public area where SNWA provided lunch for all the students and chaperones. There was enough time for all the students to enjoy their lunches and explore the area by walking through the various trails and taking in the scenery and natural landmarks.

Students then got back on the bus to head back to Moapa Valley High School.
