Students of the Hughes Middle School music program delivered a stunning performance at the Mesquite Rec Center west field on Thursday evening, March 21 in a spring festival of guitar, orchestra a choral music.

The young musicians and singers showcased their talent to the community demonstrating their hard work in the school program.

This first-time event was organized and arranged by HMS music teacher Jill Laub. Laub said that the preparations for this event had been arduous, with the students spending countless hours in practice and rehearsal to ensure a flawless execution on the day of the performance.

Laub said that there had been support from the community to help make this event happen. City Council member Pattie Gallo had helped get the use of the field, stage and PA system, she said. Ace Hardware donated the use of the chairs for the students to use, including delivery and pickup. Jodi Hughes had also played a big part with promotion of the festival.

The orchestra, choir and guitar all performed exceptionally well. The students displayed skill and musicianship as they played a diverse repertoire.

The audience was captivated by the emotive performances which ranged from “The Star Spangled Banner,” to “Stand By Me,” to “Canon in D.”

Aside from the musical performances, there was also a huge raffle event with the chance to win various prizes. The funds raised by the raffle was donated back into the musical program.
A number of local food trucks were on site for the audience to enjoy.

The festival closed with the song, “Count On Me” by Bruno Mars. A total of 230 students were singing and playing together on this number; plus there were people singing along in the audience. It was a powerful performance and community support was palpable.

HMS Guitar student Omanda Rich stated, “Everyone was well coordinated and they knew what they were doing. When we were playing, everyone was focused and looking at the teacher.”
Laub said that the event was vital for all. “I wanted to try something new,” she said. “Something that I felt could benefit the entire community. I feel that music can bring people together and create an environment of excitement, celebration and connectedness. It was clear from the students that it created a feeling for them that they will never forget. Overall I think we were able to accomplish our goals and it was a positive experience that they were proud to be a part of.”

Laub expressed her gratitude to everyone who helped her make this event happen. “I am so thankful we have a great community and many people are willing to help and donate both funds and time,” she said.

Overall, the evening was a success and the audience apprecaited it. Mesquite Fire Chief Jayson Andrus, who was in attendance stated, “I think our community is starving for events like this. Jill Laub is a rockstar. Everything she has done for the school and this community can not be overstated.”
