It was a beautiful spring morning as local off-roaders and city staff gathered at a site just across from the Mesquite Sports Complex for the official opening of Mesquite 2nd OHV staging area. This area serves as a trail head and starting point for locals and visitors riding OHVs onto the trails surrounding the community.

A Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources written by the Mesquite Dept. of Athletics and Leisure Services funded the $115,000 cost of the project.

Nick Montoya, Director of the Athletics and Leisure Services Department was enthusiastic about the event. “This facility and the one on Riverside Road, are a great boost for tourism and recreation which the mayor has touted in his State of the City Address,” Montoya said. “We want people to come and enjoy. People now have are safe place to park, with lighting and security monitors.”

Kokopelli ATV Club president Dominic Oliveto spoke at the ceremony stating. “We are so fortunate to live in this city. Look what they have done for us in creating this safe place for our vehicles. We are one of the few cities in Nevada that has allowed OHVs to drive on the streets as long as we observe all traffic laws. It is a real pleasure to be a resident here.”

Mr. Ken Ravago, one of the five Nevada OHV commissioners was in attendance.
“The Nevada OHV Commission is happy to have played a part with the funding to make such a great safe parking facility for OHV users and promote tourism for the State,” he said. “This staging area also shows folks that their registration dollars are being returned to their home turf.”

“I am impressed and you can tell by the number of off-roaders here that this staging area will be well used,” Mayor Litman said. “This is part of our goal to support tourism. I love it.”

There were many happy faces on the ATV owners, and on the faces of the city staff that worked developing the staging area. Montoya took time to mention and thank them all. And many times, mentioned the great view at the new staging area.

  1. This news does not make us happy. As new residents of Mesquite, one of the reasons we are here is to escape the madness created by so many OHV’s in and around the St. George area in the name of tourism. OHV use needs to be heavily monitored and controlled otherwise it will create more problems than benefits, and the Mesquite area has more attractions than off roading to promote tourism. Thank you.
