Don’t expect a power outage when the Clark County Fair & Rodeo puts down its stakes in Logandale April 10-14.

In fact, for the first time, Overton Power District (OPD5) will be an exhibitor at the fair, conducting presentations about the dangers of electricity, according to Kristi Eames, the company’s Customer Service supervisor of Public Relations.

“A line crew will do the demonstration,” said Eames, whose role during the event will be to facilitate questions and interact with the public in general.

The exhibition, called the OPD5 Power Safety Show, involves power-line safety. “It will demonstrate just what happens when you come into contact with power lines,” she explained.

The OPD5 trailer has a complete set-up for the lines, including a transformer and meter.
Eames pointed out the local power district has a serious message to get across to the public:
“Electricity can be deadly,” she said. “We want to make a visual impact; our demonstration will include power lines arcing, and burning hot dogs.”

Although Lineman Appreciation Day isn’t until April 18, Eames said, the county fair venue is “a great opportunity for OPD5 to educate our community about safety around power lines.”

Corey Dalley, line operations manager, expressed excitement about participating at the event.
“Our main purpose is to educate the general public,” he said. “We’ve witnessed a lot of near-misses and serious injuries, because some people don’t understand. The opportunity at the fair is a phenomenal chance for us to cast a broad net and get the message out to a large audience.”

County fair visitors who happen to miss the live presentations – which occur twice daily – will have the chance to watch a television that shows a recording of the demonstration.

The annual fair gets underway at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10; the Power Safety Show ignites at 10:30 that morning.

The five-day spectacle includes amusement rides, food and refreshments, plus “two stages of continuous entertainment along with grounds and strolling shows,” according to ccfair.com, the event’s website.
