The Virgin Valley High School VVettes drill team was given special recognition last week for winning the state championships. In a Mesquite City Council meeting held on Tuesday, March 26, the team was brought forward to officially acknowledge this accomplishment.
It began when council member Karen Fielding introduced the team and recognized them for winning many awards at the state championships.
Coach Erica Garrett said a few words about their season and the competitions where they had participated. She announced that the team had won first place in military, first place in lyrical, first place in pom, and second place in hip-hop at the state-wide contest.
“These girls go to practice at five in the morning everyday and they work really hard,” Garrett said. “So it’s nice to receive recognition for their hard work.”
Garrett then turned the time over to some of the girls from the team, Brianna Hurtado, Joelee Griffiths, Elsie Marchant, Michelle Andrus, Asia Cannon, Stella Woods, and Cameron Lee, who performed a kick line to commemorate their impressive season.
When asked later on about the team’s season and this impressive accomplishment, Coach Denise Houston added, “I am so enthusiastic, the VVettes are not only making a name for themselves as Nevada State Dance Champions but also representing Virgin Valley High School, Mesquite and their families in such a positive manner. I am proud of them for paving the way for all the future VVettes, they are currently looking up to them as role models.”
