OPD5 Board of Trustees Chairwoman Judy Metz was recognized last month for earning the National Rural Electric Association (NRECA) Director Gold Certificate.
To earn this certification, directors must first receive a number of prerequisite certifications.
Firstly, the NRECA’s Credentialed Director Certification (CCD) has the candidates going through a set of five courses that focus on basic governance knowledge and the essential skills required of electric utility directors. These include Director Duties and Liabilities, Understanding the Electric Business, Board Roles and Relationships, Business Planning and Understanding Financial Planning.
The second part of the director education program is the Board Leadership Certification (BLC). For this program board members must complete a total of 10 additional training credits for the advanced BLC. These include topics such as Risk management, Power supply, Parliamentary procedure and Technology and policy development.
Finally, the Director Gold Certification is meant to demonstrate to customers and other stakeholders a directors’ ongoing commitment to advancing knowledge and performing their fiduciary duty.
“Judy Metz has continued to advance her knowledge of the industry, and I appreciate the leadership and perspective she brings to our board room,” said OPD5 General Manager Mendis Cooper. “The Director Gold Certification requires additional courses to be completed every 2 years. This second certificate of achievement demonstrates Judy’s dedication to OPD5 and the ratepayers.”
