The Clark County Junior Livestock Association (CCJLA) show and auction was a main event during the Clark County Fair & Rodeo last week.

This 3-day show, held in the Glen Hardy Livestock Pavilion, highlights exhibitors ages 9-19 that have worked throughout the year with a project animal. In the months leading up to the show, the kids acquire a goat, lamb, steer, or pig, feed it high quality feed, exercise and train the animal to look its very best.

This year’s livestock judge was Terry Berks who judged the show many years ago and was happy to come back to Logandale.
“I got the call to come judge at Clark County Fair,” Berks said. “It was tricky to fit into my schedule, but I made it happen because this is a quality show with quality facilities. I always love coming to this show.”

The first day, the animals are judged for market market quality. The following day the kids are evaluated on showmanship, or how well they show the animal. The show ends with an auction where the exhibitors sell the animal, recoup expenses and maybe raise a little money for future education.

This year’s auction featured 191 animals over the four species of animal. Each specie has a Grand and Reserve Champion.

This year the Grand Champion steer was raised by Skyla Johnson. That steer sold for $4.25/lbs to Cast Iron Investments & Heather Davis. The Reserve Champion went to Stihl Yardley who sold it for $4.50/lbs to MV Family Dental.

The Grand Champion Lamb was exhibited by Aurelie Stratton and sold to C and S company for $7.50/lb. Reserve Champion went to Aurelie’s sister, Cora Stratton. It sold for $7.50 per pound to Western States Contracting.

The Grand Champion Goat was shown by Fallon Yardley and sold for $7.50/lb to Alexander Asphalt. Reserve Champion Goat went to Katee Madsen and sold for $7/lbs to Rockin 13 Pam Jensen.

Brylin Eastman’s pig won Grand Champion and sold for $11.50/lb to C and S Company. Reserve Champion was shown by Victoria Herring who sold it to Bob Combs for $5.00/lb.

Many other competitions happened throughout the duration of the show such as rate of gain, sheep shearing, livestock judging, livestock education quiz, and who can present the best record book.

“The show was phenomenal!” said CCJLA President Jennifer Reber. “We had a lot of exhibitors who provided good competition for each other. When you have a board this good, and everybody works together, it is a big job made fairly easy.”
