The Progress
The Salvation Army of Mesquite has established a special Senior Pantry Day event each month. This will take place at the Salvation Army facility at 742 Pioneer Blvd Suite D on the second Thursday morning of each month between the hours of 8:30 and 11 am.
Seniors with proper Salvation Army I.D.s that show they have been vetted and registered with the local staff, may pick up food items geared toward senior needs. These include fresh vegetables, Ensure, protein drinks, bread, peanut butter and other staples. The food items are well labeled and organized for quick shopping by the clients.
“We try to give the seniors a special day and have the health organization here like Care Chest, that brings health supplies out from Las Vegas,” said Salvation Army staffer Starr Flores. “The senior get one-stop shopping, so to speak. It is hard for some seniors to get out.”
“I never thought I would be in this situation,” said one Salvation Army client who asked to be known only as Jen. “I had my retirement all planned. But then this current government administration got in and prices of everything have gone way up. I have no choice. I used to volunteer at the Salvation Army now I am a client.”
