The Progress
J.L. Bowler Elementary School in Bunkerville presented a Leadership Day on Tuesday, April 30. The students invited members of the community to visit their school and see all of the leadership opportunities that they have.
People were welcomed into the function by younger students holding signs that read “Be the Change,” which was the theme of the event.
Upon entry, attendees were met by the Junior Lighthouse team and were handed a certain colored notebook. This notebook put them into groups for a tour around the school.
On these tours, the groups walked around the school where booths were set up highlighting each club or team at JL Bowler.
At one of the booths, the students talked about their goals. They explained they set WIGs, also known as Wildly Important Goals. Each grade level has the same WIG and they use these WIGs as a base level for how each student should be progressing and learning. The kids at this station said “We strive to improve our reading and math!”
Another booth was the Jr. Lighthouse team. This is a leadership group that strives to help other students at the school. These kids look out for other students and strive to be kind to everyone. Some things they help with are spirit days, reading books to classes, and planning events. They also are always smiling and trying to cheer others up in hopes of making school a safe and fun environment for everyone.
When the tour was over, the groups were led back into the gym where there was a question and answer panel with two students from each class. The kids were asked various questions about leadership and school.
One of the questions was “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Many students answered with things like, teacher, doctor, and scientist. But one little kindergarten girl shocked everyone when she took the mic and said, “I want to be famous!”
“Leadership day is a wonderful opportunity for our students to show the community what great things they accomplish throughout the school year,” said JL Bowler librarian Jamie Jones. “It is all kid-driven and led.”
Jones explained that this year’s theme is tied to a commitment to help students see that change starts small with them. “It was chosen in conjunction with the poster project used for hallway decorations,” Jones added. “Students were given the opportunity to show the community what changes they would make as leaders to help make our community better. The posters ranged from saving water and electricity to writing kind notes to neighbors. J.L. Bowler Bighorns understand that they must take that first step and be the change!”
