The Progress
The Annual Mayor’s Breakfast is traditionally the community send off for the Mesquite Days Parade each year. This year’s event was held at the Family Heritage Park on Saturday morning, May 4.
As is custom, the public was invited to a delicious pancake breakfast prepared bright and early by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mayor Al Litman hosted the event, as usual, being there to meet and greet attendees.
Another regular attendee is Rep. Steven Horsford (D-NV), who represents Nevada’s 4th Congressional District.
Both Litman and Horsford spent a good deal of time flipping pancakes and chatting with community members.
Mesquite resident Mark Davis, 16, found himself chatting with Horsford explaining that he was planning to go to the Military Academy. As luck would have it Horsford is on the State committee that nominates applicants to the academies. Horsford gave Davis his card and told him he would be sure Davis gets the applications. Afterwards, Davis said that he was happy he came to the breakfast.
Local attendee Gary Elgort enjoyed the camaraderie and community spirit of the event. “We have a sense of community here in Mesquite, more so than in other cities,” Elgort said. “We can disagree with each other on issues and still remain friends.”
In between bites of food local resident John Norwig said, “It is wonderful living in this town and doing things like this.”
Jean Watkins, who was later honored as Grand Marshall of the parade, had nothing but praise for the early morning event. “Best Breakfast in Town!” she said.
The kids in attendance had big smiles on their faces as they piled food on their plates.
Mesquite resident Frieda Lesnick, who was in attendance said, “We love to come here they always do such a good job on the breakfast. Our mayor Litman is always so accessible to the residents of our town, we appreciate that.”
Mayor Litman said that he was pleased with the event, as well as all the other celebrations planned for the day. “It is a flawless day for a great breakfast event,” he said. “And the Parade will be one of the largest we have had so far. Over 40 entries. It is great to see the community out here for breakfast.”
