SR169 accident kills two, injures one

By NICK YAMASHITA

The Progress

Two people were killed and another hospitalized on Tuesday, April 30, after an automobile accident on State Route 169 north of Logandale near a turn in the road locally called “Deadman’s Curve.”
“Unfortunately it was a head-on collision,” Nevada State Police Southern Region Public Information Officer Trooper Shawn Haggstrom said.

Haggstrom said Highway Patrol officers responded to mile marker 21 after reports of a vehicle accident were received at approximately 11:01 a.m.

Exit 93 for Logandale/Overton was closed down at Interstate 15 while northbound SR-169 was closed at Wells Road in Logandale.
“All those traveling to or from Moapa Valley were rerouted and encouraged to go the back way through Valley of Fire and use Exit 75,” he said.

The closure of the entrance and exit out of Moapa Valley remained in effect until about 4:30 p.m. while a full investigation was being conducted.

The preliminary Nevada Highway Patrol investigation indicated that a silver 2011 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling southbound on SR169, failed to maintain the southbound travel lane, and crossed into the northbound travel lane (wrong way), striking a blue 2010 Lincoln Town Car, head-on that was traveling northbound on SR169.

The Volkswagen came to rest partially in the southbound travel lanes and shoulder of SR169, and the Lincoln came to rest partially in the northbound travel lane and right paved shoulder, facing west.

The driver of the Volkswagen, Jason John William, Binder, a 42-year-old male from Logandale succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced deceased on-scene.

The driver of the Lincoln, Horace Nathaniel Herman, a 86-year-old male from Overton succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash and was also pronounced deceased on-scene.

The passenger of the Lincoln, identified by family members as Peggy Kerman, was transported by Mercy Air to UMC Hospital in Las Vegas with life threatening injuries.

The full investigation is still underway, being conducted by the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol – Southern Command.
