VVHS celebrates Prom Week with activities

By KEVIN NICOLAS

The Progress

The wrestling team, also known as the Decepticons, pose for a photo and consult together prior to their final win in the Great Race assembly on Friday at VVHS.

From April 29th to May 4th, Students at Virgin Valley High School celebrated prom week last week with the fairytale theme of “Once upon a Prom.”

Students were encouraged to dress up each day to show their school spirit. Dress-up days included pajama day, decade day, and “green-out” day.

Students also had the opportunity to participate in a movie night with their fellow classmates and challenge each other to a friendly tournament of Ro-Sham-Bo.

The yearbook for the 2023-2024 school year was released on Friday, allowing students the opportunity to reflect on the year’s memories.

It was also fortunate that Mesquite Days took place during the same week. “It was great to have the carnival happening during our prom week,” said 11th grader, Evelyn Garcia. “A lot of my friends made plans to attend both the prom and carnival and it was just a great time, especially considering the stress that comes with ending the school year.”

On Friday, students were released from classes early to attend the Great Race assembly. This event, which has been a long-held tradition at VVHS, tested students athletic abilities and quick-thinking skills.

Participants did a variety of tasks including carrying buckets of water, tossing footballs, and of course standard racing. The student team that took the win as 2024’s Great Race winners were the wrestlers, referred to by their team name, The Decepticons.

Saturday was the night of the highly anticipated prom dance which was held at the Casablanca Resort. Along with food being provided, music and lively spirits kept the party going well into the night with the Casablanca bringing a sense of elegance to an event typically not found at a high school prom.

Photo booths and live music ensured that students made life-long memories as the school year concluded.
“Honestly this year’s prom was better than the previous years,” said Paola Nicolas, a senior at VVHS. “The location, theming, and vibes were way better than previous years. I’m glad I was able to end my senior year with my friends.”

“The preparation for this year‘s prom was a success as far as I am concerned,” said VVHS student body president Ben Nelson. “We were able to put on activities such as a movie night during the week, and had amazing participation in our Great Race before prom! Some of our student council and FFA students were also able to work with Casablanca in making photo booths and centerpieces to enrich the prom theme. Overall the preparation in making this year’s prom a success was a collaboration between student leadership classes and the community!”

Nelson expressed gratitude to the Casablanca for their continuous support towards the school. “Without them, we would not be able to put on such a successful dance for our students and school!” he said. “Thank you!”
