The Eureka Resort used their annual Uncorked wine tasting event as the kick-off for a fundraiser drive to fund a public artwork to be placed in front of Mesquite Fire Station #1 currently under construction on Mesquite Blvd.

The proposed project is to be a nine-foot tall bronze sculpture of a firefighter with the American flag draped over his shoulder. This is proposed to be placed in front of the new local firehouse. The cost has been quoted at $87,000.

Mesquite Fire Chief Jason Andrus told the supporters that he wanted this project to commemorate the heroes who served during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
“Some of our new firefighters were not even born when 9/11 happened,” Andrus said. “That day should be memorialized by all of us.”

Andrus thanked the Eureka Resort for hosting the kickoff event, and also the patrons for attending.
Gerri Chasko Director of Eureka Community Initiative reported that over $4000 was raised at the event to go towards the project.

Chief Andrus and firefighters Mike Wangler and Huk Todd were at the door to greet the guests in attendance.

There were three different wine tasting tables that were kept busy by the patrons. A wonderful buffet of with Italian meats, cheese, fruits and pastry appetizers was enjoyed by all. Dave’s Jazz Saxophone provided superb entertainment.

“We are grateful to the Eureka for hosting this fund drive kick-off for the statue to be placed in front of the new fire station,” said Karen Miskimins, member of the Mesquite Public Arts Commission (MPAC).

MPAC is part of the city government and approves all public art that is to be placed on city property. “We make recommendations to be approved by the city council,” Miskimins said.
Those wishing to donate to the fund can mail a check to the Mesquite Fire and Rescue Department.
“Or if they want to drop by Station 3 with a check, I can thank them personally,” Chief Andrus said.

Checks should be payable to Mesquite Fire Department, with the word “statue” in the memo line. All donations are tax deductible
