Pirates Beat #1 Ranked Pahrump

The Moapa Valley High School Girls Basketball team played two games last week. The first was at SLAM in Henderson. The second was a much anticipated matchup with the undefeated Pahrump Valley Trojans who were ranked the #1 team in the state 3A division.

At SLAM on Tuesday, Jan. 4, the Pirates beat the Bulls 51-20 in the 3A game. The Pirates built a 9-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Hailey Western was a force to be reckoned with in the paint as she led the team with 10 rebounds, and in scoring with 16 points. She was 8-10 shooting.

The second quarter was SLAM’s best quarter as they scored 9 points, but they still trailed the Pirates by 9 at halftime 20-11.

The Pirates retook control of the game in the third quarter by out-scoring the Trojans 16-5 then cruising in the fourth with a 15-4 run for the final.

Emma Humes added 12 points.She shot 42 percent with 5-12 from the field including 2-6 from the 3-point line.

On Saturday, the Pirates hosted the high-ranked Pahrump Valley team and came away with a 36-32 win. This gave the Trojans their first loss of the season.

Moapa Valley jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter and led 12-10 by the end of the first quarter.

Moapa Valley struggled shooting during the game as they were 10-46 from the field for only 22 percent. Moapa Valley was just 3-19 from the 3-point line.

The Trojans tied the game by halftime at 19-19 holding the Pirates to 7 points in the second quarter, while scoring 9 themselves.

The Pirate defense toughened holding the Trojans to 6 points in the third creating a 4 point lead. The Moapa team then held on to win.

Humes led the Pirates with 11 points. She scored all but 5 from the free throw line. She was 1-5 from the 3-point line and 6-6 from the free throw line.

The Trojans were 2-6 from the 3-point line and 11-40 from the field, also struggling to score.
The Pirates are 13-2 overall. The Trojans dropped to 13-1.

The Pirates will travel to Boulder City Tuesday night. They then host Somerset Losee on Friday night at 5 pm.
