Fishing On Lake Mead (November 24, 2010)

Boyd Brown is the key man when it comes to weather forecast. He has a website that takes you right to Echo Bay.

Other weather reports predicted wind from 10 to 15 mph. The Echo Bay report predicted 1-6 mph. It was less than that.

Nice to talk with Craig Tame on his “Sun Tracker” on Lake Mead. We snapped some photo’s of each other.

Progress is being made on the new boat ramp at Echo Bay. It is a three million dollar project.

We fished at Sand Island, Seven miles north of the Echo harbor and caught 15 Striper. We kept nine for the fry pan or cedar board, depending on how you like to cook them. The first 2 pound striper was in the first 30 secondson the long leader of Boyd Brown. He had him on before he got all the leader out.

We used the “Dart” lure and caught five Striper in five minutes. Four of those were keepers.

The rest of the fish were caught, using anchovies for bait. They were spoiled and almost impossible to keep on a hook. We lost a dozen strikes because the striper could steal the bait off the hook. The bait was just too fragile.

We went to the Echo store, which is located on the floating marina, to check out the anchovies. They were good quality anchovies for $3.00 a bag. So that is where we are going to buy them the next time we go out.

Bill Blake said the anchovies at Maverick were of good quality, so that is another place to consider when buying bait.

We did not fish for bass today. Phillip Anderson, Boyd Brown and yours truly were on board for a day on the lake (about 3 hours of fishing). Verl Hatch, John Jones, and Deloy Mckenna, caught 17 nice Striper. Art and Ardeen caught six nice striper and two catfish, trolling near Sand Island. John Jones, Verl Hatch, and Deloy Mckenna caught 21, and kept 17 nice striper at Sand Island.

I forgot my lunch. Thanks Phillip, for sharing your lunch and drinks with me. Phillip caught a nice Striper. Phillip found the ninth Striper under the captains chair, after the photo was taken. When you’re dart fishing you get them on the deck as quick as possible in order to catch the next one.
