MVHS guard Chanel LaCroix goes up against two Boulder City defenders in a game held January 7 at home.
When it comes to crashing the boards the Lady Pirate Basketball team has completely dominated everyone. Moapa has surpassed 917 total rebounds. They have averaged 39 defensive boards and 26 offensive boards per game.

On the top of the Review Journal individual rebound leader board is Moapa’s Amanda Campbell with 237 total rebounds. That’s 75 more than her closest competitor Rachel Morris of Virgin Valley.

What’s even more impressive is that Moapa has five girls in the top twelve. Shelby Gray with158, Gifford with 140, Ashley Noto with 138 and Sprague with 62 who has played in only half of Moapa’s games.

Where does this come from? Coach Swanson and his staff have focused on this skill trying to allow very few second chances on the defensive side and more points on the offensive side.

On Tuesday night a week ago Campbell got 22 rebounds in Moapa’s victory over Rancho in Las Vegas. Ashley Noto led the team in scoring and the Pirates shot 11-16 from the line in the 43-38 win.

On Thursday, January 6, the Lady Longhorns ran away with the game against the Pirates with a score of 89-40.

It was never close. Legacy sprinted to a 24-4 first quarter lead and didn’t slowed down. They held a 47-12 lead at the half. Shakit Cox had 17 of her 28 total points in the first half.

Legacy scored 18 in the third then 24 more in the fourth. Moapa’s 15 in the third and 13 in the fourth made the grand total 40.

Hanna Leavitt was Moapa’s leading scorer with 8. Amanda Campbell’s 7 points was second on the team. She also pulled down 17 boards to maintain her average. Harding finished with 6 points. Shakespear had 5. Gray had 4, Sprague 3, and Noto 2. Atkins, Reece, and Williams, each finished with 10. Hicks finished with 14. Free throws had Legacy shooting 11-28, Moapa shot 12-27

Friday night the Lady Pirates played their first league game against the Lady Eagles of Boulder City. This game was much like the night before as Boulder pummelled the lady Pirates 70-47.

Brianna Harding led Moapa with 13 points. Ashley Noto added 12. Amanda Campbell had 9. The Lady Pirates looked out of whack from the beginning.

The Eagle press caused all kinds of problems for Moapa. Boulder jumped out to a seven point lead before Noto drained a “3” pointer. With 4:20 left in the quarter they were the Pirates first points.

Then the Eagles scored five layups. Moapa’s bench received a technical foul when they were told only one coach could stand up on the bench at a time. It was then Coach Swanson called the head of officials Marc Rattner and protested the game. Why wasn’t Boulder City warned? Their coaches were up as much as Moapa’s.

At the end of the first, Boulder led 23-7. The Lady Pirates were outscored 12-16 in the 2nd quarter for a half time score of 19-39 B.C.

During the second quarter the starters were on the bench about midway through. The third quarter saw Moapa shoot 2 for 8 on free throws for the quarter. Ashley Noto was given a personal foul which should have been Shelby Gray’s, giving Noto her fourth. The official reporting to the table gave the wrong number. After the third it was 51-29, Boulder City.

The fourth was much of the same as Boulder continued the pressure. Moapa finally found the rim and scored 18 points in the quarter. But it was too little to late as Boulder City scored 19.

With 13 seconds left in the game the Moapa bench got their second technical. Coach Swanson was ejected after an assistant stood up. Swanson will be suspended for Monday night’s game unless he wins the protest.
