Fishing On Lake Mead (May 4, 2011)

By Loren Brooks

I think it’s good to have a little wind, even though we think twice about going out on the lake when the red flag is up at Echo Bay Marina. The weather reports are worth checking, just like the moon charts are worth checking, when it comes to fishing for Striper and Small Mouth Bass in Lake Mead.

Last week was pretty exciting for Rodney Wood and Alan L, in their 19 foot “Tracker”. They became the talk of the town when Rodney hooked into and landed an 18 pound striper.

They were fishing the Overton Arm of Lake Mead, near marker 18, when the big fish tied into an anchovy, and gave Rod the fight of his life; at least as it relates to Striper.

Rod said, when he was cleaning the fish, that he found a 10 inch striper inside the big boy’s belly.

Rodney is well known on the rivers up in Idaho for catching the Steelhead Salmon. Now he joins a group made up of Bud, John, Leroy, Jewels, Pat and Stan, and many others, who have all caught Stripers over ten pounds, and up to 18 pounds.

The fish are in very good health. I think we can all say the fish have been scrappers this year with no “razors”.

Sadly, some of the guys and gals have experienced a famine on the lake, for reasons unknown, but we all still go back out there to catch that big one like the one that was caught by Rodney last week. The promise that the lake will continue to rise, makes for an exciting return this fall to Overton, and Overton Beach, for another year of fishing with friends. You people in Overton, keep catching fish, and we will join you next October.

Keep your lure in the waters, the waters of life,
