The Moapa Valley High School Lady Pirates varsity volleyball team crushed the Canyon Springs Pioneers in a three game match last Friday, returning to form after a lackluster performance at home earlier in the week.
Although the Pirates also won that match against the much smaller Desert Pines Jaguars on Tuesday, Sept. 6, after the long Labor Day weekend, the score of 28-18, 28-18 and 25-17 belied the closeness of the game. Coach Mandie Matheson said she was disappointed in the intensity displayed by her team.
“No one really had great stats,” she said of her players after the game. “It’s hard to stay up and focused after coming off a good tournament (Saturday, Sept. 3), but I think we played with less intensity than I expect from the team.”
Friday’s game was a different story, however. The Pirates took the best of three match, 25-7, 25-10 and 25-17.
“It was very nice to see the team get back into focus,” Matheson said. “They served tough and played super aggressive at the net.”
Notable stats included seven digs by Emma Eira, seven kills by Malary Reid and eight aces by Sierra Kimbrough.
