State 3-A Football Roundup

By Dave Belcher

Moapa Valley Progress

When Boulder City traveled to the Virgin Valley Dawg pound last Friday night it was a sure thing that the winner would come out of the game in first place, the loser in last place, with the Pirates in the middle for the southern 3A. Each team has only two league games and that is all that matters.

The game itself was a defensive match up where the Dawgs earned 179 yards total for the night and won 14 to 0. Both touchdowns were scored in the first quarter in which many people figured was going to be the start of a blowout.

The opening kickoff saw Toscano take the return to the end zone on a 97 yard run. The second score had Thompson on an 11 yard run for the final score. Virgin Valley was 1 for 2 on 2 point conversions.

Boulder City on the other side had 178 in rushing and a total of 199 yards total offense. So Virgin Valley is in first place while Boulder City brings up the rear.

Virgin Valley travels to Henderson to take on Green Valley while Boulder City goes to Western for their best chance of the remaining games for their second win of the season.

In the north Lowry beat Sparks 59-10 as Jace Billingsley ran the ball an amazing six times for 208 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught the ball twice for 77 yards and two touchdowns. The Buckaroos led 52-3 at the half before coasting to the win. Lowry is 6-0 while Billingsley has rushed for 1,503 yards on 91 carries for the season this far. Lowry is ranked #1 in the 3A by maxpreps. Lowry hosts Spring Creek Friday night.

Truckee made it 29 wins in a row as they destroyed Fernley in Fernley 56-19. Truckee rushed for 250 yards as a team and was led by Cole Roberts who had 122. Fernley rushed for 200 yards led by Jeremy Ruiz and his 135 yards. Fernley started the game and jumped out to a 6-0 led when quarterback Ken Bradley ran the ball in for a 23 yard touchdown. Truckee blocked the extra point attempt.

Truckee returned the favor with a score of their own when Shaffer hit Waters for a school record 98 yard pass and touchdown to take a 7-6 lead after the extra point.

Fernley’s Ruiz then took the ball and ran for a 56 yard touchdown and the led at 13-7. Truckee came back and scored when Pettit caught a 73 yard pass from Shaffer to take the led back 14-13.

Fernley returned with their own air strike as Bradley hit Klotz for a 20 yard score to lead 19-14 after a two point try failed.

Then Fernley disappeared. It was all Truckee after that. Roberts scored three of his four touchdowns: two 1 yarders and a 45 yarder as Truckee took a commanding 42-19 lead at half.

Truckee scored twice more in the third to finish with a 56-19 win.

Truckee is now 5-0 and ranked 2nd by maxpreps.com in the 3A.

Truckee will travel to Reno and play winless Wooster Friday night. Fernley is 3-3 and will host Fallon Friday night.

In South Tahoe the Indians from Elko visited and beat South Tahoe 42-28. They had trailed in the game going into the third quarter until an onside kick from the huddle fooled the Vikings as the Indians recovered and took the lead for good.

Elko is 3-2 in league and on the season while South Tahoe is winless in league and 2-4 overall. Stowell led the Vikings with 212 yards and 2 touchdowns including an 84 yarder.

In Dayton the Dust Devils had to have a comeback to beat the Colts of Wooster 19-17. Dayton travels to Elko Friday. Dayton is 4 -2.

In Spring Creek the Green Wave of Fallon beat the Spartans 20-17. Fallon was down 4 points and on 4 and 9 Fallon ran a fade route and scored the winning touchdown for the Wave. Both teams are at 3-2 with Spring Creek losing their last two games and heading for Lowry next Friday.

The northern standings are as follows; 1st Truckee 5-0, 2nd Lowry 4-0 league (6-0 overall), 3rd is Elko at 3-2 and a win over Fallon makes Fallon 4th also at 3-2. Dayton and Spring Creek are tied for 5th at 2-2 (Dayton 3-2 overall). Fernley is 7th at 1-3 then comes South Tahoe at 0-4 (2-4 overall). Bringing up the rear and winless is Sparks at 0-5 (0-6 overall).

In the South Virgin Valley is 1-0 in league and in 1st place they are 5-1 overall. Moapa is 0-0 in league and is in second 5-1 overall. Boulder City is 0-1 in league and 1-4 overall.
