Fishing The Overton Arm of Lake Mead

By Loren Brooks

Everyone has been looking for a break in the weather. Saturday February 18, was a perfect day for those who got out on the lake.

Unfortunately, I was landlocked. Walking pneumonia puts the kibosh on fishing. Thanks to Doctor Penick, Julianna will be out of the woods soon and I’ll be back out on the lake.

ROY, DON & LEE, from Sun & Fun got into some nice Striped Bass on Saturday. Most of the boats got out early and every one I talked to, caught fish. The water is warming up and the female bass have eggs for the spawn.

I can’t understand why the road to Overton Beach is closed. The road to St. Thomas is open from sunrise to sunset. Why not the road to the ramp at Overton Beach being open during the same hours? The fishermen are not asking for the opening of a store, restrooms, or any other amenities. We don’t even need the dock if that’s the worry about access to the road down to the water.

The water is well over 20 feet deep at the ramp. Lets get that road open!

I called a number of fisherman with a cell phone Saturday to get a report on fishing. By noon, the reports were pretty good. Bud and Walt had 8. Rod and friends had 13. Doug and friends had 5. and Roy’s big one was already in the boat.

Some fishermen are switching from the anchovy bait, to lures, and trolling real fast (3 mph) to nail these fish which are capable of swimming 12 mph.
