Little girls interested in cheerleading had a chance to interact with the Moapa Valley High School Cheerleading squad at Jr. Cheer Camp last week. Both high school cheerleaders and cheerleaders in-training had a great time learning new cheers, chants, and dances.
Monday through Wednesday last week, the girls met together in preparation for a final performance on Wednesday at 10:30. Each day of the camp the girls would learn fun cheerleading chants and games to help one another loosen up and feel comfortable.
The girls were divided up according to several age groups to learn their routines. The dances that were taught were choreographed by members of the high school cheer squad. For three hours on Monday and Tuesday the girls were hard at work learning and having fun.
Then on Wednesday the cheerleaders met together one last time to play games and prepare for their performance. They went over their various dances and cheers again.
Parents, grandparents, and friends were invited to come see the little girls show off their routines in the final performance.
The 4-5 year olds started off the show with their chant and cheer. They danced to “Zipadee Do Da.”
The next group were ages 6-8. They chanted to MHS and then did a cheer with a stunt in it. Their dance was to the song “Brokenhearted.”
The 9-11 year olds were the last group to perform. They knew their routines well. In their chant they also had a stunt but it was more difficult than the previous group. The older group danced to “We’ll Be Alright.”
The Moapa Valley High School Cheer Squad puts this Jr. Cheer Camp on as a fundraiser for their upcoming year. They had approximately 30 girls sign up which was less than previous years.
“The cheer camp has gone really good despite our low numbers,” said head cheer coach Shawnee Cardinal.
To make up for low numbers this summer, the cheerleading squad will be holding another Jr. Cheer Camp in January.
