Fishing The Overton Arm (April 23, 2014)

By LOREN BROOKS

Loren Brooks

I thought last week was my last story for this spring, but it seems I’ve got one more.

With summer on it’s way in Southern Nevada, the fishing is excellent. The Overton Arm is back to normal with everyone catching fish.

Last week, Tom Currie, landed a nice 11 pound striper while fishing with Bill and Gordon. He has been looking for a “lunker” and bingo’ed using crank bait while trolling near “Sand Island”, north of Marker 18.

Rodney, Alan and Bud, were also back out there last week with crank bait, and caught 22 on Monday and 21 on Friday.

Stacey and Jodie Beard and family came down to Overton this week, and used his father’s boat. They like to use anchovies and they caught a lot of striper. Thursday they caught 14, Friday they caught 8, and Saturday they caught 16.

Their technique is to cut up the anchovy in small pieces, and combine the bait with a hula skirt that covers the bait while trolling for striper.

My brother Roy, got a “wake up” call Monday, while trolling on the port side of the Well Craft. He thinks it might have been a big one. He was dozing a little when the strike jerked the rod almost out of the boat. His drag was too tight. When the fish struck, it took all of the bait except for a piece of orange peel.

We were using “crank bait” on the starboard side and anchovies for bait on the port side of the boat. Roy tipped the anchovy with a piece of orange peal.

That’s right. If you don’t believe it, call, Boyd Brown up in Moscow, Idaho. That was Boyd’s favorite trick when fishing with me several years ago. Boyd and Linda lived with and took care of Virginia Laird at Robbin’s Nest, in Overton. In those days the water was so high it almost came up to the store at Overton Beach.

We got teased a lot about using orange peal, but when it works it’s another trick you can try some time. Let me know how many you catch on an anchovy tipped with an orange peel.

Years ago, Leroy was fishing with Dennis Hadderly, and caught an 18 pound striper using a hula skirt.

Lately the talk of the lake is “crank bait”. Now all you have to do is find out which lure is working the best. I think Rodney will tell but that’s up to him.

De Roberts and Lynn Johnson had a good day on the lake this week. Roy, Don and Bryce were trolling south of 18, near the shallow water marker at Stewart’s Point and picked up 9.

Try calling on channel five. Someone will probably give their location and how they are doing on the lake.

Have some good fishing the rest of this summer and stay in touch. I should be on Deer Creek Reservoir, near Park City, Utah next week.
