Moapa Valley Progress
The Moapa Valley High School Girls’ soccer team had a divisional matchup on Thursday, played on their home turf against Sunrise Mountain High School. The two teams are in similar positions in the standings, so this was to be a pivotal game if either team hoped to make a run at a playoff spot. The Pirates were not to be denied on their home turf, and came out with a 2-1 victory.
The team was ecstatic after this victory. Scorers in the game were sophomores Lexi Schraft and Bailey Bunker. Schraft also assisted on Bunker’s goal.
Head Coach Lisa Cornwall attributes the victory to her team’s dedication to improvement.
“All their hard work at practice paid off,” Cornwall said. “[They won because of] their commitment to themselves and one another to reach the goals set as a team.”
Cornwall added that this should come as no surprise, because the team goes into every game expecting a win. Cornwall expects continued progress and improvement as the season rolls along.
Although the team, won, there is always room for improvement.
“We need to improve on bringing everything together for game time,” Cornwall said.
Taking a look at the future slate of games for the Pirates, Moapa Valley will be faced with consecutive rivalry games, the first of which will be played at home against the Boulder City Eagles on September 30. Just under a week later, they’ll be taking on the Virgin Valley Bulldogs, on October 6. It’ll be interesting to see how the team moves on following an exciting win.
The JV team also went up against Sunrise Mountain on Thursday. The team held the Miners scoreless and didn’t score themselves either, resulting in a 0-0 loss.
