The Pirate youth wrestling team took 11 wrestlers to Coronado High School last Saturday to compete in the Sin City Nationals tournament.
Jj Serrano, Trueitt Ciserella, Brendon Van Vliet and William Anderson wrestled in the beginners’ tournament in the morning and gained some very valuable experience. Serrano and Ciserella took 2nd place in their weight classes while Van Vliet and Anderson both took 4th in their weight classes.
Beck Freeman, Stetson Houston, Caleb Anderson, Tyson Houston, Brody Redd, Chance Houston and Trevor Van Vliet wrestled in the Premier tournament in the afternoon and made their presence known.
Beck had a tough bracket and lost two matches early. Stetson, Tyson and Chance Houston all wrestled hard to come away with 3rd place finishes. Brody Redd went 2-2 to come away with 4th place. Caleb Anderson and Trevor Van Vliet both went undefeated and came away with 1st place finishes.
Due to many tournaments being scheduled on Sundays this season, Saturday’s tournament was only the second Southern Nevada Wrestling Association tournament the Pirates have attended this year. It’s impressive to see the impact they make despite their limited mat time.
A big thanks goes out to coaches Phil Sprague, Kellie Houston, Prentice Freeman, Riley Staley and all the other coaches and parents to devote so much of their time to help our wrestlers.
