State 3A Spring Sports Roundup (May 24, 2017)

Softball
Division 3A
The state championship was won by the Fernley Vaqueros who went undefeated in the tournament. The Vaqueros beat Moapa Valley 11-0 in the first round. Then they beat Churchill County (Fallon) 5-4 to advance to the state championship game where they would need to lose twice to finish as the runner-up.
McKenna Montgomery saved her best pitching for last as she pitched a one hitter in the title game against Churchill County in the 3-0 win over the Greenwave. Fallon beat Pahrump Valley twice for their two wins in the tournament. The first was a 10-3 win in the first round. They beat the Trojans 5-3 in the semi-finals. But they lost twice to Fernley.
The win gave Fernley their fifth state championship in the softball history, which started in 1977 when the NIAA began the softball program.

Division 1A
Pahranagat Valley beat Wells twice after losing to the Leopards earlier in the tournament.

Division 2A
Needles California beat Lincoln County for their 12th state title in school history. They won it in 2013.

Division 4A
Palo Verde beat Reed of Sparks in the 4A final. Reed came through the loser’s bracket and beat Palo Verde 4-3 to force a second game where Palo Verde won 9-3. Palo Verde last won a state title in 2014.

Baseball
Division 3A
The state tournament was a repeat performance for the Boulder City Eagles who won three straight games to win the state championship for the second year in a row. The tournament was held at Faith Lutheran High School.
Boulder City beat Elko 6-2 in the first round game. They then beat Spring Creek in the second round or semi-finals, 10-8, to advance to the championship game.
The Eagles beat Spring Creek for a second time in the championship game 8-7.
Spring Creek had beat Moapa Valley 3-2 in the first round. After the first loss to Boulder City, in the second round, they beat Moapa Valley in the loser’s bracket final 17-7.
Elko was the first to be eliminated with their second loss of the tournament to Moapa Valley 8-4.

Division 1A
Pahranagat Valley beat Indian Springs 5-4.

Division 2A
Lincoln County won their second in a row with a 6-2 win over Needles California.

Division 4A
The Basic Wolves won the second baseball title in a row when they beat Galena in a 16-6 five inning game.
