Fishing The Overton Arm (April 4, 2018)

By LOREN BROOKS

Chase LaCrox, age 18, and his friend Brantley Duval, age 5, bring back childhood memories for me and my brother. That was a long time ago when I was 12 and my brother was 18.

Last Friday, while walking the banks of the Muddy River, Julie and I came upon these two young boys fishing. Chase was teaching Brantley how to fish and very successfully.
I asked Brantley to hold up the catfish for a photo. Chase said he taught Brantley his friend, how to swim, and now he was teaching him how to fish.

I remember back in 1945, my brother Roy was the same age as Chase. We were living in Upland, California. Roy took me to a creek near “Old Baldy” for my first lesson on how to catch a fish.
In those days we used a cane pole with a string tied to the end of the pole and a worm on a hook. It seems just like yesterday.

Chase was teaching his little buddy how to catch a fish just like my brother taught me 73 years ago. I have caught a lot of fish in the last 73 years.
I’m sure all of you anglers on the Overton Arm, or elsewhere, can remember when you caught your first fish.

Good fishing on Lake Mead’s Overton Arm will lead these two boys to day of fishing for Striper, Catfish, Blue Gill, Crappie, Small Mouth Bass, and Large Mouth Bass, and hopefully teach
others this great sport of angling.

This past week, a lot of fish were caught trolling north and south out of Echo Bay Marina.
Ken Brown, hosted a day on the lake with friends who caught one right after the other. By 1:00 pm they had 15 nice striper.

Roy Foster and his buddies got into a nice mess of striper near Stewart’s Point and caught 24, one of which was a nice crappie.
John and Gary caught over 20 nice striper over on the east bank near 18.
Bryce said it was a beautiful day last Thursday. They caught fish going north from marker 19.
Every one I talked to had a great day on the lake.

My turn is next week when daughter Laura and her husband Dave come down from Syracuse to fish, swim, hike and ride ATV’s. For those anglers who are headed back north, I hope to see you again next October.
