As summer begins the Virgin Valley High School volleyball team was quick to start back to work on the fundamentals. Last week, the Hurricane High School volleyball coach Dan McKeehan instructed a volleyball camp at Virgin Valley High School. Mesquite students from grade 6-12 participated in the camp to learn new skills and improve abilities.

Participants were grateful for all the work that went into the camp.
“The coaches at volleyball camp helped me be able to jump serve better and taught me to always put in effort no matter how tired I get,” said VVHS sophomore Cheyann Hafen. “They also helped me to improve on my volleyball skills and become a better player.”

Throughout the camp McKeehan taught that “the mind is the athlete” and the girls took this lesson to heart.

“This camp taught me a lot about how important your mentality is in volleyball. The way you think affects your playing ability,” Lydia Wakefield said. “If you say you can’t do something, then you probably won’t be able to do it, and you never know what you can accomplish until you try.”

Coaches for Virgin Valley were impressed with the progress of the girls throughout the camp that was organized by Head Coach Melissa Julien.

This will be Julien’s second year as head coach. Other returning coaches will include Allan Conrad, Courtney Tobler and Nikole Cardon.

This year’s team will feature many younger girls and the future looks bright for Virgin Valley High School volleyball. These girls have a lot of energy and ambition to be successful.

“Volleyball camp was a great investment for the players,” Julien said. “Dan McKeehan is a spectacular volleyball coach. My favorite part of this camp was that I learned so much as a coach and helped the players be better.”

Overall the camp was a success and the players are all looking forward to a fun and successful season.
