Moapa Valley Progress
The Moapa Valley Pirates varsity wrestling squad has earned a much deserved break for the holidays but the JV wrestlers travel led to Henderson last week to compete in the JV tournament hosted by Foothill High School.
The competition took place on Thursday, December 23 and was attended by nine Las Vegas schools. Approximately 110 wrestlers were divided up into pods where they wrestled all the other contenders in the pod. Each wrestler had two or three matches in their pod and, based on win-loss record, was seeded into an eight man double elimination bracket.
Most of the Moapa wrestlers did very well throughout the tournament but were eventually eliminated.
Five of the Moapa wrestlers did make it into the medal rounds. These included: Zach Baldwin in third place with three pins; Aaron Troxell-Tom in fifth place with four wins; Ricky Glaubitz third place with four pins; Jake Rebman third place with four pins; and Braden Evans with a first place finish in his weight category.
Braden had an impressive five wins and all five came from pinning his opponents. He was voted by the other coaches as most outstanding wrestler in the lower weight class.
The Pirates’ next varsity tournament is at Eldorado High School on December 28-29.
