Fishing On Lake Mead (January 12, 2011)

By Loren Brooks

It has been some time since I have been out fishing on the lake.

But at church last week, Frank Kimball told about the 9 pound Striper he helped catch in 300 feet of water near the dam in Lake Mead. Frank said he netted the fish, just as the fish threw the hook. It was over 30 inches long.

The largest fish caught by my friend Leroy, from Fun and Sun Trailer Park was 18 pounds.

The current state records is 63 pounds, 49 inches.

Over the years we have taken many pictures. The pictures are a reminder of what can happen when trolling or jigging on Lake Mead.

Striped Bass are delicious to eat, and a favorite recipe is to cook the filets on cedar boards (which have been soaked in water for two hours). The seasoning comes from Home Hardware.

A little bit of butter, “fish seasoning”, and lemon pepper, with the lid closed on the BBQ for 15 minutes, makes for a fine dinner. If you don’t believe me, just ask Stan Brown, from Overton.

Here is a description of the fish:

Body olive-green above, shading through silvery on sides to white on belly with brassy reflection. There are 7 to 8 longitudinal dark stripes following the scale rows. A spiny dorsal fin is barely separated from a soft dorsal fin. The tail is forked and the body is cylindrical in shape. Striped bass occur in only a few of the larger lakes in Nevada including Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. The fish can become very large with some specimens larger than 50 pounds.

I am going out Thursday or Friday of this week. We hope to see many of you back on the lake now that the rain is passing us by and getting a little warmer. .
