The local Parks and Rec youth girls volleyball program is in full swing and was in its second week of games last week.
The program saw lower enrollment this fall than in years past, according to local Parks and Rec coordinator Theresa Briggs. With no middle school age girls enrolled and only a couple of dozen enrolled for grades 4-5, there was only enough to form three teams, Briggs said. That allows for each team to play one game, with one team rotating to play a double header each week.
“It still works out great because it isn’t really about winning games or having some big tournament champion,” Briggs said. “The goal is for the girls to learn the fundamentals of the sport. And this still gives the girls a lot of play time on the court and work in practice.”
The program’s three coaches: Michelle Anderson, Nikki Staheli and Mandie Matheson; are also committed to the goal of the program.
“All three of them are really good with the girls and work with them on the skills of playing the game,” Briggs said.
The Parks and Rec program also holds a weekly volleyball skills clinic for girls in grades 2 and 3. Briggs herself works with this age group along with helpers Cristine Johnson, Summer Owens and Tabitha Witsken.
