The Moapa Valley High School Boys Basketball team just flat-out struggled in their three games last week. They lost all three: Del Sol 61-45, Arbor View 67-42 and Rancho 61-39.
Del Sol came in with a loss and the Pirates were hoping to send them home with their second one of the season. The Dragons and Pirates started out and ended the first quarter with a 10-10 tie as each team battled to gain control.
Moapa took a six point lead after the first half as they outscored Del Sol 12-6 in the 2nd quarter with the score 22-16. Del Sol came out inspired and began a crusade for the next two quarters as they scored 25 points in the third followed by 20 in the fourth burying the Pirates.
Sophomore Jeremy Waite was the leading scorer for the Pirates with 10 points. McConnell and Terril each had 8 and the Pirates as a team scored 21 for the rest of the second half.
Kasen Hughes summed it up when he said, “We’re like the Dallas Cowboys, we’ll find a way to lose.”
Moapa shot 15 for 23 from the line and was out rebounded 13-21.
For Del Sol three players had 11 points each to lead the Dragons in scoring Kirschbaum, Prescott and Collins.
On Wednesday the Pirates hosted the Aggies of Arbor View where they fell behind early and never recovered.
The Aggies shot an amazing 18-19 from the free throw line and Burks led them with 21 points in the 25 point win.
Arbor view scored 22 and 20 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
For Moapa Shane Terril lead the Pirates with 12 points. Landon Willard scored 7.
But the exciting thing to see was Dakota Watters return from his injury from football as he scored 5 points. The Pirates have been in need of a point guard to bring the ball down the floor and run the offense.
The final was 67-42. Moapa was 6-11 from the line and was out-rebounded 16-23.
The Pirates finished off the week at Rancho High School. Simply put, the Rams took a 19-11 lead at the end of the 1st quarter and never trailed after. Rancho led 32-18 at half and 50-27 after the 3rd quarter.
Rancho won the game 61-39.
For Rancho Surbia scored 24 while Hill had 13 and Beverly had 12.
For the Pirates Kasen Hughes led the Pirates in points with 10.
Rancho is 1-2 after last week while the Pirates are 1-9.
The Pirates have this week off and will battle for practice time at the middle school while the high school gym is being resurfaced. Then they travel next week to Cedar City and the Hodson Classic versus Grantsville, Beaver and Juab.
