Moapa Valley High School traveled to Clark High School on Saturday night, where the Pirates beat the Chargers 41-8; improving their record to 2-0 on this young season.

Zach Hymas was 12-16 passing on the night as he threw two touchdowns and also ran for a score in leading the Pirates to the victory. Hymas also threw one interception.

Moapa started out sluggish. Their first play of the game was fumbled and recovered by Clark deep in Pirate territory at the Pirate 29. Clark would then turn the ball back to the Pirates after a fourth and twelve pass was incomplete. Clark was held to four and done.

Later in the first quarter, Hymas led the team on a 69 yard scoring drive. He scored the touchdown on a four-yard keeper to give the Pirates a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Clark’s next possession saw their quarterback get pounded on every play by Pirate defense. That is what happened thoughout the game as the Clark quarterback got up slow or was helped off several times during the night.

Moapa’s next possession finished when a one yard pass from Hymas to Tyler Zobrist was completed for the second touchdown and a score of 12-0, Pirates.

The two point conversion was no good.

“We started slow,” said head coach Brent Lewis. “It’s hard to get a team up for a game when you know you’re better then they are. I’ve got to give it to Clark; they fought hard in the first half and didn’t make it easy on us. I thought we took another step forward this week. The defense had another solid effort.”

Moapa scored again on their next possession when Hymas threw to Jeremy Waite for a twenty-five yard touchdown to close out the scoring in the first half and a 20-0 lead at half time.

To start the second half Moapa came out inspired as Jared Repp received the second half kickoff and took the ball 55 yards to set up the first play in the second half. That turned out to be a 25 yard run by Justin Hughes who scored the first of three Pirate touchdowns in in the third quarter.

Clark was held to three plays and a punt when Jeremy Waite returned the punt 64 yards and the touchdown with 8:19 left in the third quarter.

Andrew Huerta finished the Pirates scoring on an 11 yard run with 2:32 left in the 3rd to make the score 41-0.

Clark got their only touchdown with 12 seconds remaining in the game, a 1 yard pass to Marquice Stuart from Kareem Warren.

Moapa had 363 yards total offense with 215 on the ground lead by Huerta’s 86 yards and 148 yards in the air by Hymas.

Clark was held to 186 yards most of which came on the last series.

This week the Pirates will play their first home game. They host the Mojave Rattlers, a team they beat last year in the state semi-finals 36-32.

This will be the early test as both teams are favored to make the playoffs this season and win their respected regions. The game is tomorrow night at 7:00 P.M.

The Pirate JV and freshman play tonight against Mojave.

First game is at 4 PM and the second is at 6:30.

Last week the freshman Pirate team was beaten by Clark 32-24 in a game where the Pirates struggled in each of the first and third quarters and scored in the second and fourth quarters.

The JV team blasted their Clark opponents with a final score of 41-0, Pirates.
