MVHS Volleyball Travels To Reno Tournament

By GANNON HANEVOLD

Moapa Valley Progress

The second week of NIAA high school volleyball has passed. The Pirates, like many other teams throughout the state, made the travel up north for the High Sierra Tournament in Reno. The tournament featured teams from all around Nevada and California.

For Moapa Valley, the tournament started out rough. On Friday, their first two games were against Roseville (CA) and Reno High School (NV).
Against Roseville, who traveled from the greater Sacramento area for the tournament, the Pirates hung around in two sets. In the first of the pair, the Tigers beat Moapa 25-19. In the second, the Pirates tried to force a deciding third game, but came up just short by a final score of 25-22.
Against Reno, Moapa Valley lost in two sets once again. The scores in each set were parallel, with a score of 25-20 in both.

Their next match came against Bradshaw Christian, also from the Sacramento area. In this one, the Pirates pulled together and got a win. In the first set, the Pirates eked out a tight one, and escaped by a score of 25-23. Moapa completed the two game sweep of the Lions with a 25-21 win in the second set.
So at the end of the first day of the tournament, the Pirates were 1-2.

On Saturday, the Pirates woke up bright and early to face off with Harbor High School (CA). Their opponents from Santa Cruz, CA, who happen to share a mascot with Moapa, controlled both sets, and won them by scores of 25-17 and 25-21, respectively. The Pirates of Harbor had given the Pirates of Moapa Valley their third loss of the week.
Moapa, in search of their second win, delivered with a dominating win over Enterprise (CA). In the two sets played, the Pirates won 25-13 and 25-16.

Following their win over Enterprise, the Pirates went on to play their sixth match in two days against Galena High School of Reno, Nevada. In the first set, Galena beat Moapa Valley 25-18, and the outlook wasn’t appearing great for the Pirates. But in the second set, the Pirates won a thriller that went past 25. The final score was 27-25, in favor of Moapa.

With three wins and three losses in the two day tournament, the Pirates then headed into their seventh and final match, against the Red Bluff Spartans (CA).

For the second straight match, Moapa Valley started slow, with a 25-14 loss in the first set. Although, following the same pattern, the Pirates bounced back just as strong with a 25-22 win to force a deciding third set. Red Bluff ultimately left this match triumphant, after a 15-11 win in the final set.
The Pirates now have a 7-7 record in out-of-league play. They have two more out-of-league matches ahead before their division schedule begins.

On Thursday, the Pirates will travel to Legacy to face off with the Longhorns.
