Pirate B Team Defeats Tigers

By GANNON HANEVOLD

Moapa Valley Progress

The B and JV Pirate football teams hosted their first games of the season last week, as they welcomed the Hurricane (UT) Tigers to town. Both Pirate teams were coming off of tough losses last week at Sierra Vista and needed a bounce back game.

The first game of the day was played by the Moapa Valley B-team. With their hometown fans in the bleachers to support, the team did not disappoint.
Just a minute into the game, the outlook wasn’t great, as Hurricane dashed for a 70-yard rushing touchdown to open up scoring and take a 7-0 lead.

Fortunately the Pirates responded. First down carries by Luke Barlow, Elijah Whitmore, and Hayden Redd set up the team in good position inside the five. They finished off the drive with a 1-yard score off a rush by Redd to tie the game at seven a-piece.
Later in the quarter, the Pirates struck with another big play as QB Kashten Frei connected on a pass to Elijah Whitmore, which turned into a 30-yard gain.

Into the second quarter, Hayden Redd once again polished off a solid drive with another goal-to-go TD; this one coming from seven yards out to give the Pirates a 14-7 lead.
With six minutes left in the half, Nathan Dalley made an interception against the Tigers. But the Pirates fumbled and gave it back a minute later.
With 2 seconds left, inside their own five, Hurricane elected to pass and was sacked by the Pirate pass rush for a safety as time expired. Moapa took a 16-7 lead into the half.

In the second half, touchdowns by Elijah Whitmore and Nathan Dalley kept the Pirates in control en route to a 29-15 victory.

For the JV team, things started out great against Hurricane. A 27-yard pass from QB Luke Bennett to TE Josh Cox was completed on their first offensive play. However, things stalled after that.
But it did for the Tigers as well. The score was 0-0 at the end of the first quarter.
A punt return touchdown by Hurricane gave them a 6-0 lead. A fumble gave them the ball right back, and they threatened at the goal line.

On fourth and goal for the Tigers, Dallas Larsen intercepted Hurricane in the endzone to give the Pirates the ball.
In the final minute of the half, the Tigers scored a touchdown to lead 14-0 at halftime.
Then things got out of hand as Hurricane ran away with the game in the third quarter. Eventually, they won by a final score of 34-0.

This week, on Thursday, the two teams travel to Legacy High School to play the Longhorns.
