Pirate JV and B Teams Face The Bulldogs

By GANNON HANEVOLD

Moapa Valley Progress

It was the day that every Moapa Valley High School Junior Varsity and Freshman B Football team player had circled on his calendar. On Thursday last week, the teams took on their bitter rival, the Virgin Valley Bulldogs.
The B team was going into the game following a disappointing loss against Arbor View. Meanwhile the JV team was riding momentum from their 35-0 shutout of Boulder City.

The JV team had high expectations for their biggest game of the year. But early on, things didn’t go their way. Virgin Valley’s offense was impressive, and their running game did a lot of the work. One player for the Bulldogs scored both of the team’s touchdowns for the game on big plays.
“We just didn’t get any big plays,” said MVHS Head Coach Dallas Larsen. “But we also had too many mistakes that stopped our drives.”
Ultimately Moapa was held scoreless, and lost 12-0.

It was a different story for the B team. Their game quietly turned into a classic.
Down six in the final quarter, Kashten Frei connected with Nathan Dalley over the middle for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked, leaving the game knotted at 20 apiece. Neither side could put points on the board, sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, Virgin Valley had the first chance to score. The Pirates defense stood strong. On fourth and goal they held the Bulldogs short of the goal line, leaving the score tied.
When it was the Pirates turn on offense, things were different. On second and goal, Kashten Frei ran play action and found Nathan Dalley for his third touchdown reception of the afternoon. The play stood as a walk-off touchdown, giving the team a 26-20 overtime victory.

After the game, Head Coach Stuart Humes talked about the extra meaning the game held due to the passing of former B team coach Brent May earlier this year. “I couldn’t help but think about Coach Brent May when the game went to OT.,” Humes said. “Just a year ago, he and I coached the freshman team and won on a field goal in overtime. I know he would have enjoyed this game. He loved beating the Dawgs.”

The B team will play Legacy on Wednesday this week, while the JV team has no game on the schedule.
