Moapa Valley Progress
The Moapa Valley High School JV football team was unable to schedule a game last week because Boulder City couldn’t put out a team to play. But the B football Pirates still traveled on the road for what would be an exciting rivalry matchup with the Eagles. The game, held Tuesday, gave the Pirates a very short week to prepare. But it turned out to be a thriller.
Early in the game, it was Boulder City that came out to take control. Three first half touchdowns from the Eagles gave them an 18-0 lead and their home crowd was certainly satisfied.
But despite the upsetting start, the Moapa team was determined to make a game out of it. They responded in the second half with a furious rally to tie the game at 18. This was thanks in part to a great performance from Garrett Clove, who scored one of the team’s touchdowns to cut the lead down. Clove also added 20 tackles over the course of the game. “Dillon had a monster game,” said MVHS head coach Stuart Humes.
With the game tied, the two teams were headed to overtime. Unfortunately for the Pirates, the Eagles struck first with a touchdown, and tacked on a two point conversion to make the score 26-18. The Pirates couldn’t respond, and Boulder City left with a 26-18 victory.
Despite the Pirates missing various key skill position players on offense, they were able to keep the game close, and certainly showed the Pirate heart that fans have come to know.
“The kids showed a lot of heart and determination to come back,” Humes said. “There were a lot of really good things but we didn’t do enough consistency-wise to get the win.”
While Moapa was unable to pull off the victory, Humes was still proud of the attitude the team displayed in coming back and fighting, tooth and nail, to come close to getting the win.
“We were very pleased with how the boys played and carried themselves,” Humes said. “The will to win was there and we couldn’t have asked for more.”
Because the JV team didn’t have a game scheduled, many of its players were able to come down and play with the B team. Humes highlighted the value of their presence as well.
