A Successful Father/Daughter Hunt

By STEPHANIE BUNKER

Fourteen year old Amiah Dominguez shot this 4×3 buck in area 14 late last month.

Fourteen year old Amiah Dominguez, from Moapa, harvested a mule deer late in October. This made it her second successful deer hunt.

She had hunted earlier in the month without success in area 14, seeing a lot of does but no bucks. Despite the low luck, her spirits remained high as they drove around and hiked the mountains and hills.

On the weekend of October 29 Amiah and her father Jacob went out again to area 14. They had not seen a buck for her to shoot, until the day they had to leave. That morning the father/daughter pair woke up early and began driving and glassing.

Around 7:00 Amiah spotted movement on a hill so she told her dad to stop and back up. Sure enough they saw ears, upon further inspection they found a buck in the herd of about 8 does. The pair hiked up onto a hill where Amiah got set up to take her shot with her 243 from about 280 yards.
“The first time I shot I hurt it so it didn’t run,” Amiah said. “I missed my second shot, but it went down on my third shot.”
Amiah filled her tag with a nice 4×3 buck.

As it happens so often with deer hunting, a long and despairing weekend can change in an instant. When the action does hit, it is over in just a few minutes. But Amiah made the best of her hunt and time with her dad.
“My favorite part was hiking and driving around to find the deer,” she said.
She addedthat her dad’s birthday was that same weekend. So for her dad’s birthday she wanted to get her deer.
