Pirate Wrestling Preview

The Pirate wrestling program is looking forward to a great season this year.

Last year the Moapa team saw five athletes qualify for the State tournament. At the top of that team was Trevor Van Vliet who dominated in his weight class and came away with the State Championship. But Van Vliet graduated last spring.

Still, the local team is bringing back three other state qualifiers from last year. Those include seniors Gavin Henrie and Zach Anderson; as well as junior Jorge Cervantes.
“Every wrestler on the team has experience,” said assistant coach Ryan Anderson.

Despite that, though, this year’s team is one of the smallest in team history at only 10 wrestlers. That number is four shy of having a full team.
“We have high expectations for all 10 of those who have come out,” Anderson said.

Wrestling for the Pirates this year (in order of weight class) are:
Austin Tafoya, Jr., 106 lbs
Jorge Cervantes, Jr., 113 lbs
Avery Stratton, Fr., 120 lbs
Zachary Anderson, Sr., 138-145 lbs
Hayden Redd, Soph., 145-152 lbs
Gavin Henrie, Sr., 152-160 lbs
William Uri, Soph., 152-170 lbs
Cropper Henrie, Fr., 182 lbs
Ryan McMurray, Soph., 182-195 lbs
Jackson Mills, Jr., 195-220 lbs
