Moapa Valley Progress
The Moapa Valley High School Boys’ Basketball team played two games last week and ended up with a split: a win and a loss.
The first game was at Sky Pointe where the Pirates beat the Eagles 62-49. Moapa Valley jumped out to a 11-8 lead before running away with the game in the second quarter 22-8. The Pirates lead 33-16 at half time.
The Eagles made a strong run at the Pirates but fell short. Moapa Valley added to their lead with a 16-13 third quarter just before the Eagles run changed a 20-point Pirate lead into a thirty-point win for Moapa Valley.
The Eagles run was 20-13. Moapa Valley finished 10-19 from the free throw line. Nathaniel Thompson was the leading scorer with 27 points. Lucas Walker added 12 and Josh Cox scored 11-points.
Nijel Murry scored 21-points for the Eagles with Jaden Macfalane scoring 10-points.
With that game the Moapa Valley team got its second league win.
On Thursday, the Pirates travelled to SECTA where they were beaten, 59-47. The Road Runners started the game by hitting two three-point baskets for a 6-0 lead early. SECTA finished the game with a total of seven three-point baskets.
The Pirates would gain their first lead with just under four-minutes to play in the first quarter at 9-8. But the Roadrunners would take a 17-14 lead by the end of the first quarter. They bumped it up to nine points by halftime 36-27.
Thompson led the Pirates in scoring for the night with 22 points – the only Pirate in double figures.
Jurelle Orbino led SECTA with 17 points followed by Zail Lewis and his 16.
The third quarter is where SECTA took a commanding lead from which the Pirates could not recover. The Roadrunners outscored the Pirates 17-7.
Moapa Valley tried to comeback with a 13-6 fourth quarter far short of what they needed.
The Pirates will play at Virgin Valley on Friday.
