Fishing The Overton Arm (March 28, 2018)

By LOREN BROOKS

Brice Bell was looking for good weather. So was my family coming from Arizona. But the wind kept all of us off the lake this past week. PROGRESS editor, Vernon Robison, was hoping to go out on the lake and take some photos for a magazine publication for the Chamber of Commerce. But it wasn’t happening.

Still, alot of anglers did still venture out onto the lake last week, despite it being a bit breezy.

Pat and Stan had a great day going south from Echo. Pat wrote on Facebook to their fishing buddies that it was breezy in the morning on March 8, but the afternoon was beautiful. They managed to catch 24 stripers, with a lot of doubles and triples, using anchovies. She said all the fish they caught were males. They were down south in 170 feet of water.

Tom and his son, Paul Gilbert, had a great day going north over on the east side, near Lime Cove. Paul came down from Clinton, Utah to fish with his dad. They were using crank bait and anchovies. They caught 14 and kept 8.

Paul is pictured above, holding a nice stringer of stripers which will wind up on the dinner table for his wife and three children up in Clinton.

Here is another quote from Gene Kugach’s book entitled “Fishing Basics” and his “Fisherman’s Alphabet.”

D is for Disturb the bottom with your bait or lure.
E is to select the proper Equipment.
F stands for Find the best areas to fish (LOCATION -LOCATION-LOCATION).
G stands for Give em time to take the bait. In other words, don’t be too anxious to set the hook. Let the fish run with the bait and give them time to get the bait down. Once you take it away, chances are they won’t pick it up a second time. Some of my friends use a rod holder while trolling to give the fish a chance to let you call, “FISH ON” set the hook at 12 O’clock high.

Let’s get back out on the lake for some great fishing on the Overton Arm!
