Moapa Valley High School has a new addition to its coaching staff. Stephanie Gray has signed on to be the new coach for the school’s Girl’s Golf program.

Gray and her family moved to Moapa Valley about two years ago. She says that she is beyond excited to share her passion of golf with our local youth.

Gray began her athletic career at the age of 5. The sport of figure skating consumed her during her childhood and teen years. She was performing at a very competitive level, when a severe injury ended her skating career. But she continued dabbling in other sports.

She found her true love for golf after becoming a “weekend warrior” on the course. Stephanie found herself saying, “this is really fun”.
After becoming a member of Las Vegas Country Club she joined the women’s league and began to really feel a passion for the sport.
“Golf is a game of honesty and integrity,” Gray said. “You are responsible to record your score, there are no refs watching you.”

She also said that she “loves that you never win” in golf. “Of course you win tournaments and other events,” she explained. “But there really is no end to the game. You always are trying to improve your personal score. It’s a game that you play, enjoy and love.”

Gray points out that the pursuit golf, especially at a young age, is a “unique opportunity to get involved in a lifelong sport.”
“There really is no age limit on golf,” she said. “Plus it is a year-round sport and one that pushes you to always do better the next time.”

Gray listed the scholarship opportunities out there for women golfers. “Universities are looking for athletes in these different sports,” she said.
Gray is excited and energetic for the potential she sees in the Pirate Girls Golf program. “There is a lot of room for growth in this program,” she said.

The team will travel to Coyote Springs golf course each day to practice. “While the heat is hard at times, the game is worth it,” she said.
